Isn't this a little dangerous?

The first thing people ask me about a sailing vacation...

"Isn't this a little dangerous?"  Excerpt from Close Reach Blog

If you're thinking "White Squall." you’ve got the wrong idea. Most folks have a mental picture of us out in the middle of the ocean when I start talking about this trip. We never leave sight of the islands. And in fact, we are in the middle of the islands for most of the trip, rarely more than a mile or two from shore in any direction. If weather is more your concern, don’t worry. We are never far from a safe harbor should weather blow up. However, the weather network is excellent in the islands and there are rarely any surprises as long as you pay attention. Hurricane season ends shortly before or after we arrive (depending on the time of year we’re there) and is rarely a factor.

Learn about sailing

I am studying my sailing terminology so I can be a good crew member for Travis.

Common Sailing Terms

My favorite so far is "Yawl" - A yawl has two masts, with the mizzenmast much shorter and set aft of the rudder post. A yawl has three of four sails. A yawl is closely related to a ketch, but a mizzen on a yawl is much smaller than on a ketch.  Since the term yawl has fallen into disuse, some boats that are really yawls are described as ketches.

It sounds more like a Southern term we are all too familiar with "Yall" as in "you all"

Yacht Shots

There is a company called Yacht Shots that takes photographs of your crew sailing on your boat.  Not something you can do by yourself (hard to take a pic of us on the boat while we are ON the boat).

We are going to try our best to do this while we are on our trip.

Check it out!  Yacht Shots BVI
